Do I need a referral?

Most medical specialists will only accept referred patients.  The referral allows us to prioritise your appointment accordingly and ensure you are seeing the appropriate specialist.  Without a referral letter you will be unable to claim a medicare rebate for the consultation.

What do I need to bring to the appointment?

When you come to the appointment please bring the following

• Referral letter from your GP/specialist
• Any relevant imaging, biopsy and blood test results from your GP/specialist
• A list of your current medications and any known allergies
• Medicare, DVA or aged pension card
• If you have private insurance, bring the health fund details
• Completed Patient Information Sheet (available under Patient Information - Resources)

Are my medical records kept private and confidential?

Your medical file is handled with the utmost respect for your privacy.  Our staff are bound by strict confidentiality requirements as a condition of employment regarding your medical records.
We will not release your medical information without your consent

Do I need to have private health insurance?

No. Dr Chung works at Nepean Public Hospital and Blue Mountains Hospital and can provide care to patients without private insurance.

However, having private insurance does allow you and your family access to the right health services at the right time.  You will have more control of your healthcare and can choose the facility and timing of your treatment.

What should I expect during the first visit?

During the initial visit, Dr Chung will discuss your symptoms with you and perform a physical examination.  You may be required to undergo further investigations including blood tests, imaging  and needle biopsies.  Once all the results are available he will then be able to counsel you on the diagnosis and the appropriate treatment for your condition.

Do I need to have surgery?

Depending on both your diagnosis and your physical wellbeing, surgery may or may not be the most appropriate form of treatment for you.  Dr Chung will discuss with you your condition and the appropriate treatment options.  If surgery is recommended, he will discuss with you in detail what the procedure entails, the risks and benefits of the treatment and any alternatives options.

When can I resume regular exercise?

The time a patient returns to regular exercise varies depending on the operation performed.  All patients are encouraged to start walking around slowly the day after surgery unless specifically advised otherwise.  Regular aerobic or vigorous exercise is not encouraged during the first 2 weeks as it may increase the risk of bleeding , swelling and bruising.  Weight lifting and contact sports are allowed after 6 weeks in most cases.
